Max Blair robs the Outlaws of the loot at McKean County! Waters and Canfield also go to Victory Lane

East Smethport, PA, (June 20, 2017) by Jay Pees

Third-generation winner Max Blair timed in at second quick, then outran the field of 24 World of Outlaw competitors before a packed house Tuesday to score a popular victory on his home turf, taking over at the front of the pack on lap sixteen from World of Outlaws regular Morgan Bagley, from Longview, TX. In other racing, Tim Steis won in the Raught’s Country Kitchen Pure Stocks, John Waters led from flag to flag to pick up the Little Power Shop RUSH Crate Late Model win and Josh Canfield prevailed in the night-capper for the Mandy’s Young Guns.

Twenty Eight Late Models signed into McKean County Raceway to do battle with fourteen World of Outlaws regulars taking on fourteen locals in the 550th World of Outlaws Late Model Series event. Devin Moran turned in the fastest time at 14.576 and an average speed of 92.618. After time trials the heats were set with Moran, Morgan Bagley, and Brandon Sheppard winning heats and Greg Oakes winning the B-Main the race was on.

After drawing the pole position, Bagley led the first sixteen laps of the Hamlin Lake 50 presented by Herc Rentals with outside pole sitter Blair hounding him all the way, trying both inside and outside lanes to find the way by. At ten complete the leaders entered lapped traffic with Bagley first appearing to open his lead but Blair closed in and was right on his rear bumper at lap fourteen. On lap sixteen the outside lane proved successful as Blair got by, Even at the line then taking over in turn one but Bagley was able to close in at lap 29 only to see Blair again extend his lead.. At lap twenty Moran also got by Bagley for second. By the halfway point Blair had a three car-length lead and was maintaining it in heavy traffic over Moran. The first yellow appeared at lap 35 when Tyler Erb slowed with a flat tire. On turn four on lap 36 Damian Bidwell, Joey Coulter, and Dan Stone all got together, again slowing the event. The final caution was at lap 39 when Frank Hackenast executed a 360° spin on turn four but kept going. Because he never stopped, he was restored to his position in the running order for the restart. The final eleven laps ran without incident. Blair went on to his first-ever World of Outlaws win in front of his home-area crowd, a very popular win. Moran was second, 0.973 seconds back with Sheppard third, Rick Eckert fourth, and early leader Bagley fifth.

In the companion events Tim Steis won the Pure Stock feature, leading the distance over Zach Gustafson, Jake Mascho, Mark Schweikart, and William Bigley. The feature was punctuated by a hard crash in turn two when Kylie Brown spun and was hit head on by Andrew Frye in turn two resulting in a conflagration in the Frye that brought out a red flag. Both drivers escaped without injury.

John Waters captured the win in the Little Power Shop RUSH Crate Late Model feature, from the outside front row. Sixth-starting Jeremy Wonderling wound up second with pole-sitter Jason Knowles third, ninth-starting Brad Mesler fourth, and Eric Wilson fifth, all the way from 15th on the starting grid. Four cautions slowed the race, the first at lap two when Kohle Wanzer spun, at lap ten for debris on the front straight, lap twelve when Randy Ralyea lost a wheel on turn four, and on lap 18 when Erin Peters spun and was collected by R J Pistner.
Josh Canfield won the Mandy’s Young Guns feature over Brooke McLain, C J Sherwood, and Dylan Edminster Dustin Skinner and Josh Isaman. The kids class provided the most exciting finishes of the year with the heat race coming down to near inches with Isaman over Edminster and feature action saw, Brooke McLain go door to door for majority of the race with eventual winner Canfield. The standing room only crowd was entertained by the young teenagers.
MCR comes back to action next Thursday night with the Patriot Sprint Cars rolling in for $4000 to win payday. Also the Mini Stocks will run their first special of the year with a $400 to win event along with a full program of RUSH Late Models, Close Racing Supply RUSH Pro Mods, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Mandy’s Young Guns. Racing begins at 730pm Thursday, June 29.
